2. spiders on my lashline (dir. grace tan)

SHORT / UPCOMING

Spiders on My Lashline is a poetic, queer revenge story. Dreamlike and surreal, this was such a fun film to design. Together with Grace and DP Jaclyn Paterson, we began pre-production 10 months before the shoot, which allowed for a very aligned and highly researched visual language.

We used the same colour palette throughout the film, but delineated between past and present by utilising dull and saturated versions of the same colours. Key design references included Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ Swallow, Wim Wenders’ Paris Texas, Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank, Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here. Red was a motif, and thus used highly selectively.

It was also important to us to create an accurate setting for a 90’s Viet Christian Sydney family. We looked at a lot of Western Sydney images from the time, and leaned into the eccentricities of Australian suburbia, referencing photographers like Warren Kirk and George Crewdson.
